Kelechi’s thoughts.

The first time I saw her, I had developed locomotor ataxia. Her beauty could make anyone but a blind man go wacko! Her eyes had the innocence of a dove. It was the first time my gauze had lasted so long on a female homosapien. In seconds, I was already thinking of what our first child would look like if she agreed to marry me–he would look like Ramsey Noah, no Majid Michael. Just then I regained my consciousness and remembered that I was a pastor’s son and should not be thinking of things like that. I was with my friend Tobi when the gorgeous damsel walked into the school compound with a rotund looking woman that had a gele on. Not for decency sake, I would have thrown cautions to the wind and approached her, but I restrained myself; I had a better alternative—I would become her friend. Slow and steady wins the race.

Our class teacher miss Hannatu Akuwe had just introduced her to the class. Her name was Chinyere Stella Obi.

“Please make sure you relate well with your classmates and get all the notes from them. Its second term and we have already gone far with academic activities, but if you work hard, you’ll still be able to catch up.” Miss Hannatu Akowe said.

As Miss Hannatu Akowe spoke, I had all the while wished Chinyere would ask for my own notes or at least sought my opinion on how she could get to catch up with all the academic work. The gorgeous Aphrodite had only but went and sat close to Habiba. Her model-like footsteps and pink dress made her look all the more like the gorgeous models that graced the pages of allure magazine. Chinyere was simply a sparkling gazelle.

That day I could barely comprehend all the lessons. One thing was on my mind—how I could get close to Chinyere. Her love was worth more than a million lessons. The thought of her succulent hands running through my head was enough to drive the living daylight out of me.

It’s been two weeks and Chinyere had not talked to any boy in the class. All my attempts to draw her attention by making attempts to answer questions brilliantly and dressing super neat in order to impress her has proven futile. Perhaps I should just take a bold step and talk to her before anyone of those rascal boys will do so. Jide and his cohorts seemed to have their way with girls. In fact, he had been nicknamed “sharp shooter” because of his exploits with girls.

“I just hope my shyness and timidity will not kill me someday.” Kelechi thought.

************************************************************

It was Monday morning and as usual Chinyere was meticulously dressed. Her flawless shape aligned well with the angle of the new school uniform she had just got.

“Gling, gling, gling.” Musa the time keeper had ringed the bell for break time. He was ever strict to time, at least only when it was time for break and closing. At other times, he as who he as—a geek!

Everybody was in a rush to go out except me, I had envisaged that would be the perfect moment at least say hy to Chinyere since she barely goes out for break.

“Hhhhhhhhhhi” I had managed to say. She had the kind of beauty that made you lose self confidence.

“Hello” she managed to reply with a homely smile that revealed the glorious gape that lay between her teeth. It made her look more adorable. More like an Aphrodite if you ask me.

“I’m Kelechi,” I said, with celestial  vibrations running through my spine. I had managed to regain some form of composure as her smile gave me some sort of self confidence because she at least smiled at me.

“I know,” she said effortlessly.”Habiba has told me a lot about you.” she added.

“Rrrr really, what did she say about me?” I managed to ask. A blush clearly written on my face. It was flattering to know that a girl as pretty as Chinyere would have bothered to know “a lot” about me.

“Never mind,” She said flippantly as she brought out a pack of biscuit from her bag. “Here, have it.” She said, her arms stretched towards me to offer me some biscuits.

“Thank you,” I said, surprised at her homeliness and kindness. She talked to me with such a freedom it was though we had known each other for years. Perhaps she had also been waiting for me to talk to her all this while. Her tenderness eased off the adrenal surge I was having and so I sat close to her. I simply needed to hear her voice more.” It sounded better than the whistling trees of Barbados or the falls of the Niagara. In fact, the lavender-scented atmosphere her perfume created was enough to calm a waging storm. If only she would say yes to me, then my life will be a source of envy to my peers. Even Jide that professes to be a sharp-shooter has never dated any girl as pretty and beautiful as Chinyere. One thing though, what if asking her out will be a rather too direct option and hence, possibly repel her away from me? What if I waited a while longer to further cement our friendship before I say anything? Maybe that will be a better option Kelechi l thought, unsure if he was giving in to cowardice or being wise.

3 MONTHS ON.

It was third term and academic activities were in top gear. I was happy for one—I would soon be out of SS1 and hence be a bigger boy! On the other hand, I was defeated and frustrated for one—I had not yet asked Chinyere out and to make things worse, she performed better than me in the second semester exams. “Such girls never take relationship seriously,” Kelechi thought—in fact, I would seem to her, a distraction. To think that I’m even below her would even compound the issue. Maybe we are not meant to be together because the way I understand it, a man is supposed to be at the top or maybe, just maybe I’ll work harder next session and ask her out. Then, I’ll be under little or no pressure and I’m sure she will be attracted by my intelligence!

************************************************************

“Careful with my girl,” Said a voice from behind, it was Jide.

“I beg your pardon,” Kelechi replied astonished at Jide’s guts. It had the kind of commanding tone that sent vibrations through one’s spine.

“You heard me right, you fool! I don’t want you frolicking around my girl, Chinyere,” Jide said rather rudely.

Just then Chinyere cut in, “No need to be rude sweetheart, Kelechi is only a friend.”

Immediately, Kelechi received a shocking down to his marrows. “Of course, of course,” he replied obviously feeling defeated and dejected. Jide who had come second to last in the second term exams had played a fast one on him despite the fact that he came fifth. Perhaps, there was more to getting a girl than intelligence, brilliance or wit…………..whatever it was that made it easy for guys to get girls, Kelechi was yet to come across in the depth of his thoughts.

If you have a clue, please let Kelechi know what it is.
